Russia launches its first robot into space

« Feodor » will have to carry out several missions, to test its capacities in different situations. In the longer term, this type of machine could be used for outings in « deep space ».

The first humanoid to see space. On Thursday, August 22, Russia launched a rocket carrying Feodor, its first humanoid-cosmonaut robot, to the International Space Station (ISS). The Kremlin would then like to use these machines to explore deep space.

The robot with its silver anthropomorphic body measures 1.80 m long and weighs 160 kg. Fedor, its Russian first name, is translated as « Fedor » in English, which corresponds to the acronym of « Final Experimental Demonstration Object Research« .

Once on the ISS, where he is expected to stay for 10 days, Feodor will test his abilities in different situations, under the supervision of a human cosmonaut. Among his main skills is the ability to imitate human movement, which means he could help astronauts or perform their tasks.
