Tourism Remains Safe Despite Merapi Phreatic Eruption

Yesterday, on Friday morning, 11 May 2018, Mount Merapi in Sleman Regency of Yogyakarta spewed volcanic ash of 5500 m resulted from the phreatic activity.

The volcanic ash rained on the surrounding areas of the region, yet no casualty has been reported. Center of Volcanology and
Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) issued VONA red resulting in the closure of Adi Sucipto international airport from 10.42 am to 4.30 pm local time. PVMBG stated that the mountain remains in normal status.

Ministry of Tourism of Indonesia appreciates the preparedness and quick response taken by National and Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB and BPBD), Ministry of Transportation, related agencies, and local communities for providing the public with the updated information to avoid panic and getting all necessities prepared.

Ministry of Tourism keeps monitoring the situation and coordinating with tourism office and related boards in Yogyakarta to make sure that tourists are well informed on the update of the situation and being taken care off accordingly.
