Fighting continues between Cambodia and Thailand, bad news for tourism

Violent fighting erupted yesterday, Thursday, December 11, on the disputed border between Cambodia and Thailand, with explosions heard near centuries-old temples, just before a scheduled phone call between US President Donald Trump and the leaders of both nations.

This renewed border conflict has already left at least 19 dead, according to local officials, and triggered a mass exodus: more than half a million people, mainly from the Thai side, have fled the border areas, the scene of clashes involving fighter jets, tanks, and drones.

The conflict centers on the demarcation of the 800-kilometer border, a boundary dating back to the colonial era, with the two countries disputing sovereignty over several historical temples.

These clashes are the deadliest since the five days of fighting in July, which had already claimed dozens of lives before a fragile truce was reached.

Donald Trump stated that he planned to speak with the Thai and Cambodian leaders that same day to demand an immediate end to hostilities.

Dramatic Consequences for Tourism

The consequences for the tourism industry are particularly devastating: Thailand and Cambodia are heavily dependent on international tourism, and the ongoing border fighting, amplified by military strikes, is generating widespread fear and uncertainty, leading to a wave of cancellations for trips to both countries, especially in areas near historical temples, and damaging the image of regional stability in Southeast Asia.

Furthermore, the endangerment of listed or ancient sites, such as those near the explosions, represents an irreplaceable loss of heritage and deters cultural travelers.
